Mansion in Wilmington, NC - Trash and recycling information.Household Trash Collection
Household trash should be bagged in your assigned city rollout cart. It is suggested that you double bag any smelly items you are disposing of (such as diapers or cat litter) in order to prevent leakage, foul odors, and tearing. You shouldn’t overfill your containers, and the lid should be able to securely shut. Any waste left unbagged will not be picked up without Orange Extra trash stickers, which can be purchased 12-at-a-time at a cost of $1.20 each by contacting your city disposal services by phone, online, or by visiting the Collections Office at 305 Chestnut St. Also note that clothing and small items are considered household trash and should be placed in your rollout cart along with other household disposal items. Furthermore, bulky items can only be picked up upon request by calling (910) 341-7875. Any bulky items piled up alongside your normal trash will not be picked up.
Commercial Trash Collection
Commercial establishments in the Central Business District (CBD) can choose City of Wilmington trash collection ranging from 2 times a week to 2 times a day, 7 days a week, depending on specific their needs. Commercial waste disposal uses City Blue trash bags instead of rollout carts, and strict collection times help maintain the quality of the area by keeping waste off of city streets and sidewalks. In addition to trash pickup, crews also provide daily litter pickup, restroom maintenance, graffiti removal, alley cleanup, bag delivery, and city code enforcement. Mini sweepers and pressure washers are also used to further maintain the cleanliness of the CBD area.

Recycling
The city of Wilmington’s recycling program (called Separate Materials and Recycle Together, or “SMART”) is a voluntary program provided for residential and commercial customers at no additional charge. Recycling is on the same day as trash pickup, and recyclable items include tin food cans, glass bottles and jars, aluminum beverage containers, newspapers, magazines, and several other items which you can review by visiting the city services website. When recycling, be sure to place your SMART waste disposal box in the right-of-way by 7:30 am on the same day as trash pickup, be careful not to place any non-recyclable items in your box, remove the tops and lids from bottles, jars, and plastic containers, and rinse out all items. Residents may recycle up to 4 electronic items per week every Wednesday at the New Hanover County landfill, free of charge.
