UNCW Athletics College Sports At Its Best

The athletic department of The University of North Carolina at Wilmington operates within the guidelines set forth by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and Colonial Athletic Association (CAA).
UNC Wilmington, which sponsors 19 intercollegiate sports, has held Division I membership in the NCAA since the 1977-78 season. The NCAA administers 79 championships in three divisions in 21 sports. More than 18,000 men and women student-athletes compete annually in these events, designed to determine national champions.
All rules, policies, procedures, directions and goals of the NCAA are determined by the colleges and universities working and voting together in a common body.
UNCW has been a member of the CAA since 1985 and competes with the University of Delaware, Drexel University, George Mason University, Georgia State University, Hofstra University, James Madison University, Northeastern University, Old Dominion University, Towson University, Virginia Commonwealth University and The College of William and Mary.
Sports sponsored by UNCW include men and women’s soccer, men and women’s cross country, volleyball, men and women’s swimming and diving, men and women’s basketball, men and women’s indoor and outdoor track and field, baseball, softball, men and women’s tennis and men and women’s golf. The UNC Wilmington Seahawks men’s basketball team represents the University of North Carolina Wilmington. The team plays in the Colonial Athletic Association. The Seahawks last played in the NCAA tournament in 2016.
